Since we began breeding parrots, our
life has pretty much revolved around them 24 hours a day (and
seeming more when babies are fed around the clock every two hours).
We do take off one day a year for the Jimmy Buffett concert (but
that in itself is another labor of love).
We got word just a week ago that Peter
Mayer and Scott Kirby added a date to their duo tour - close enough
for us to slip away and take it in. Peter is the guitarist for Jimmy
Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, an accomplished singer, songwriter, and
(as we learned last night) a wonderful storyteller. We shut the
store down mid-day in order to ensure we arrived on time for the
sold-out event.
Peter has written and collaborated to
create several of the songs recorded by Jimmy Buffett, as well as
other artists. Scott Kirby is a fixture at several bars in Key West
(when not consuming, he's singing). The two of them together brought
a warm and personal meaning to each song they played. The final
number,
Faith In Angels, was a tribute to an audience member who
recently lost their father. The way it was played by Peter was so
heartwarming, and when Scott pulled out his harmonica the song took
on a rich dimension that touched both of us (and likely every person
in the audience).
If you get the opportunity to hear
either of these two great performers, take it! You'll come away
better for the experience.
