The Avian Polyomavirus is a deadly threat to Caiques
and Eclectus Parrots for their entire lives. While other parrots will develop an
immunity to the polyomavirus around the time they wean, the Eclectus and Caiques
do not. The vaccine available is costly and has a very short expiration. That
means most vets cannot afford to keep it in stock, they have to buy an entire
vial, and that makes it very expensive for the single parrot owner to obtain for
their bird.
We have our flock of Eclectus and Caiques vaccinated
each year. We buy in bulk once a year and offer our customers the ability to
have their birds vaccinated along with ours. The result is a huge cost savings
over what you would pay at the veterinarian's clinic:
The cost you pay at the "Polyoma Party" (this year,
2012) is $30 per dose when pre-registering (It's $50 per dose if we still have
some vaccine available after the cut-off date. Compare that to the $50-80 office
visit, and anywhere from $75 to $180 per dose at a veterinary clinic. For the
past 5 years, Alpha Animal Hospital have provided their veterinary services to
make the bulk purchase of the vaccine and to come to our aviary and perform the
vaccinations at this special price. They agree with us - the vaccine saves
lives, prevents the chance of a painful and heartbreaking death of a loving
flock member, and is an important part of good avian health.
Held each year in late May, the Polyoma Party is a
great way to not only receive the vaccination, but to add in a quick wing and
nail trim just in time for the warmer weather when you want to include your
parrot in outside activities, or to protect from flying out a door or window
(which is most probable during these great weather days in our area).
We send out notices each year to those who have
signed up for our newsletter as well as put announcements on our website, on our
FaceBook page, and in our Twitter feed. To keep up on the times and details of
not only the Polyoma Party, but also the other events and happenings in the
aviary, make sure you are signed up, too!
