Leg bands make a
difference!
We received an email from someone who found a cockatiel asking
how they may go about finding the owner. The bird had a leg band. We
replied that the leg band would trace back to the breeder (ours do),
and the breeder should have a record of who purchased the bird (we
do).
They responded with the band number, which happened to be one of
our registered bands. We looked in our data base, found the owner
and put the two parties together. The cockatiel was back home within
12 hours of the finder contacting us.
Please keep your contact information current with the breeder. It
could make the difference. |

Parakeet - 6/7/10 - Falls Church, VA Cute parakeet, mostly white
with beautiful blue markings. I think it's a male because the cere is blue
and not a baby because his cap is white. He flew onto my balcony in Falls
Church. He easily walked up onto a stick and let me place him in a cage. He
does not appear to be injured. He is eating, drinking and chirping away.
Someone is probably really missing him. Email

here. There is a national
site, 911 Parrot Alert, that
also lists lost & found parrots. |

| Leg Bands - Many
pets will have a leg band that identifies the breeder. A good breeder will
have a record of the owner. Always check a leg band against the
Legband
Database |
| |
| Microchip - A
special chip smaller than a grain of rice can be inserted below the skin and
provide definitive identification. Most vets have a microchip reader which
is passed over new patients to check for the presence of a chip. If you find
a lost bird, contact a vet to arrange for a scan to see if the owner can be
identified. If your pet has a microchip, be sure you have your current
information in the
registry. Check the various microchip registries
here. DJ
Feathers can arrange for a veterinarian to microchip your baby under
anesthesia (should not be done without anesthesia on birds). [More
